Entrepreneur of the Year Award: Jane Wurwand

Tuesday, June 8, 2010
From 11:30am to 2:00pm

Putting Vision (and Education) First: Jane Wurwand and the Building of Dermalogica
The Dermalogica story begins in 1983 in Marina del Rey, California, when British-born Jane Wurwand, a licensed esthetician, and her husband, Ray, opened the first International Dermal Institute (IDI) where she invited licensed skin care therapists to get hands-on post graduate education to help make them more competitive in the U.S. esthetics business. A recent émigré to the U.S. from London where she worked as a makeup artist for Mary Quant, via South Africa, where she worked for Redken's Skin Care division, Jane had a bold vision: To bring advanced international skin care training to the U.S. market along with a brand that reflected that rich tradition.

From the very beginning, Jane envisioned a global skin care line with plant-based ingredients, one incorporating the best of the European skin care tradition. So three years later, with a $14,000 investment and an independent chemist, she created a line of 28 skin care products to be sold only by trained skin care professionals. Today, the Dermlogica brand is in 25,000 locations in 52 countries, including 6,500 locations in the U.S. The line now encompasses 120 sku's and IDI now has more than 40 skin care training schools. This underscores Dermalogica's mission to put Training as their number one mission, and to place their products in the hands of skilled professionals well-trained to offer sound advice on skin care.

The success of Jane's company was chronicled in the Harvard Business Review and Jane was voted "Most Influential Industry Leader" by American Spa Magazine. She is on the Board of the Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at UCLA's Anderson School of Business Management, and also serves on the Board of FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising).Dermalogica also partners with 12 charities through the Dermalogica Foundation, and last year, Jane founded S.K.I.N. (Skincare for Kids in Need) which provides free products and counseling to kids in Foster Care and also helps them explore career choices and connect with scholarships. Jane will share her journey from shampoo girl to starting a school in a modest store-front, to heading one of the fastest-growing, highly successful privately-owned companies in the beauty business today.
